Beyond my expectations

5 out of 5
I purchased this item from Computer Brain - fully expected to not get it by Xmas - as I ordered just the week before. It came with 3 days to spare! Hookup was easy and straightforward, there was a special running so I purchased the lifetime TIVO advanced service - well worth it. I've scheduled items to be recorded on the TIVO from the web, and downloaded items to my laptop and desktop PCs. I used a USB wired Ethernet adaptor that plugs into my wireless bridge (Along with my XBOX and XBOX 360). They all coexist over the wireless ethernet just fine.
The subscription or "season pass" functionality is just awesome. I no longer watch live TV - I have the TIVO record it at the quality, frequency I want and watch the TIVOed shows. Never understood why people raved about them until I had one. The DVD burner works great - just two minor gripes - it would be really nice to have the ability to mark a begin and end point in a show and record just that - I'm not talking advanced editing, just a couple of quick bookmarks. Especially with Encore shows you typically get an extra 10 or 15 minutes of blather on either end of the movie that you end up having to record that sometimes pushes the movie over the time limit of the recording media so it needs 2 disks.
The other minor complaint is that it only takes DVD-R/RW but that's not that big a deal.
It would be nice if the unit had the secondary input jacks replicated on the back so you didn't have to plug in video recorders for dubbing into the unit in the front, but it's not THAT big a deal.
All in all a terrific unit with a nice design and a lot of utility!

Outstanding Piece of equipment

5 out of 5
I purchased this for my wife about a year ago. While she is not a technophile, after the first week with TIVO she threw out the VCR. The TIVO simplicity to record shows (LOTS of them with the 160GB drive) combined with the DVD burner is unmatched.
Advantages to buying the combined TIVO and DVD Recorder:
1-You can make DVDs off the TOSHIBA at 2x speed (ie, a 1hr show burns onto a DVD in 30 minutes).
2-You can put multiple shows on a DVD at one time. Set it up and walk away. You can not do that with a separate TIVO and DVD recorder.
I have it hooked to our wireless network so no telephone cord is required.
One small issue, I had a dvd drive go bad after 45 days. Toshiba sent me a complete new box. No problems after that.
This is clearly an IPOD-class product. Definately best in class for ease of use and value it brings our home. My wife is the main user and I am shocked how she could not even spell TIVO before and now she has insisted we get a 2nd unit for the excercise room.

Great! Until the DVD Recorder Died... Twice.

2 out of 5
I purchased the Toshiba RS-TX60 last October. That unit arrived with a malfunctioning DVD recorder. About 1 or 2 out of six DVDs would successfully burn. Of the others, some that could not be read by the TiVo unit could be read by my laptop DVD player.
I returned it for a replacement, which arrived in December. That unit worked like a charm. My only complaint was that I was used to zero lag from the remote on my previous TiVo unit (but its hard drive was too small, which is why I bought the RS-TX60).
However, in late January (after about 1 month), the NEW TiVo DVD recorder simply DIED. After zero out of six attempts (trying various combinations of shows and degrees of fullness of the DVD), I quit. On Amazon's "RETURNS" web page there was no way to get to "return a not-so-recent purchase", so I sent emails. I was instructed to print out a return label, but the instructions simply got me back to the "cannot get there from here" page.
At this point I am not sure what I am going to do. I may have a hardware hacker friend try to replace the DVD recorder. I may try to add an external DVD recorder and record DVDs when I am not watching TV (which is often) or I may try again to return it for credit.
Other than that, it is a GREAT unit! The hard drive is HUGE. The TiVo remote isn't as sluggish for me as others have reported, so that's OK with me. The TiVo Season Passes and other features are just as superb as before. I love everything about it, except the DVD recorder.
Good luck with yours!

Just stopped working after a year

We really enjoyed our TIVO until yesterday when the whole unit stopped working. It is out of warranty by a month and we will have to ship it out to have it fixed. God knows how much it will cost. We may get another unit, but definitely not another Toshiba.

No support available

1 out of 5
I loved the Toshiba RS-TX60, until it started to malfunction six months after I bought it. Support is essentially not available. TIVO phone support won't allow you to get past the start menu if you own a Toshiba product. Toshiba says that the issue is the TIVO software. This may, in fact, be true, since the problem is that the unit will not accept commands to navigate through the TIVO menus and will not burn programs saved in TIVO to DVD. However, a hefty TIVO fee is required to use the unit, and so clearly both of the companies should support the product.
I would not buy any TIVO unit not made, and supported, by TIVO.
