Nice product, some issues

4 out of 5
The only reason we purchased this machine was to convert a big set of VHS tapes to DVD. The Recorder is fairly easy to use for this purpose, but we have had some issues with the DVDs made. On some DVD players we have had issues playing the DVDs. Hopefully this is an isolated thing with the specific type of DVD player we have at the office. We haven't yet tested it on a broad range of DVD players.

Thought it would work....

3 out of 5
I bought it in hopes that my large collection of Disney videos would be transferred to DVD. On my first attempt it didn't work of course, I didn't even think about the Copy Rights. Bought an attachment that was supposed to override this & it didn't. I wish I would have read the fine print before spending the $$$.
Any suggestions????

Upset with VCR function

2 out of 5
Why is it that the oldest technology on this unit is the only problem with it? DVD play and record have been great but the VCR is a big issue. Tapes that play fine in my older VCRs won't work in this one. Any tape I've tried, the unit trys to adjust the tracking and can't seem to find it. Sound is garbled and picture is good but not what's expected. The sad thing is, I've had this almost six months and last week was the first time I tried the VCR function. I should have tried it when I brought it home.
Just can't understand how Sony screwed the VCR up on this one. The technology has been around over 20 years now. I expected the DVD to be the problem. Not so.

Need a Zero Star Option for this one.

I have a complete sony AV system from over ten years ago that is rock solid and performs as well today as when I bought it. So when a standalone DVD burner dropped below $500 (and a Sony!) I bought it.
This was a terrible mistake.
Pros:
Component output from DVD.
Cons:
Slow to open disk tray (over 15 seconds - annoying).
Won't play most DVD-R backups.
Won't play back recordings made on it!
Front panel 'one touch' Tape->DVD works intermittantly.
Off white 'sticker' on front actually embedded on front.
Freezes at specific points on certain disks - disks that play fine in three other players!
Bought a Toshiba big screen - done with Sony for a while...

It is ok when it works....

1 out of 5
Having a lot of VHS tapes that I wanted to convert to DVD, I thought this machine would be the one to do it. Was I ever wrong. The recorder is fine when it works. I have had it in the shop for repair twice in the last 10 months. For discs to be available for use on other DVD players, you must first finalize the discs. After finalizing so may discs, the machine will fail and tell me it can't finalize the disc. This has been the issue twice, but the latest problem was that the recorder would cut off during recording, whether it be from VHS or from something on TV. I would have thought that a brand like Sony, it would have held up longer than this. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have went with this brand or model. Thank goodness for warranties!
