It's So Good I am Buying Another One

5 out of 5
I noticed there are several reviews on various products here, but this review is on the Panasonic DMR-ES10S (the S is for Silver).
I am not a technological wizard and impatient, so my husband set this up for me. I've had it about 5 months now and LOVE it. This is on the TV upstairs. I bought it because I was having trouble with our old RCA DVD recorder (unreliable), but that's another review.
Once setup it is complete, the unit is very easy to use. I read LOTS of reviews before buying and realized the cons that others had were not of concern to me, i.e. we don't have HDTV yet so 16:9 ratio not important. All I needed was something to record things from my TIVO unit and a DVR that could record on multiple DVD formats (DVD-R, +R, DVD RAM, etc.).
Featues I Like: I like the ample space the unit allows for actually typing in the name of the show (unlike the RCA which only let you have a few characters). I really use the Flexible Recording feature to exactly fit a movie or to fit lots of shows. I DID have to play around with this feature to figure out how to work it while recording multiple shows on one disk (manual wasn't useful with that part), but I use it all the time. The picture is really good, even with a 6 hour recording time, which I use for my decorating shows. The Change Thumbnail feature is also great. It allows you to select what picture displays when you browse through the programs. This is a wonderful feature that is important to me, esp with decorating shows, where I have the thumbnail be a feature of the room that I like.
After reading some of the reviews here it seems my unit has A LOT of cool features which would be great for someone who is into electronics. I am a basic girl, so I don't need a lot of bells and whistles. I just need it to do what I want without any hassles and without reading a 400-page manual.
My only quibble is that some of the buttons on the remote are kind of small, even for my smaller female hands.
The RCA that I put on the TV downstairs is starting to mess up a lot now, so I will be purchasing a new unit. I've read reviews on the DMR-ES20, but since I am happy with this unit I am going to buy another one.

Great price, easy to use!!

5 out of 5
I bought this for my folks for Christmas. It took no time at all to hook up, and making DVDs was simple. Everything from recording off the TV, to recording movies and shows stored on the DVR, to transferring home movies from the original VHS tapes. I'm sure for about $300 more you could purchase some higher end recorders, but for under $200, you really can't go wrong. The only flaw I could find is that the initial hookup (according to the book) didn't seem quite right. After taking a whole 2 minutes to look up the easy to read instructions online, everything went smoothly. Because of that, I'm still going to give it a full 5 stars..it's not as if those 2 whole minutes ruined our life. Really, if you're new to this technology, you're not going to have any problems..believe me..A+++

One of the best electronic/computer purchase I made in the past year

5 out of 5
What an awesome device. I originally bought this device to record some cherished programs/memories on VHS tapes to DVD. What I found after purchasing it was that it also records from the cable box including HBO and Showtime. Depending on the recording mode, you can transfer programs from VHS tapes that would normally degrade after a few to several years of neglect to crisper quality images on dvd.
Here's a breakdown of the Panasonic
Picture Quality:
- For the price (got it for about $180 at Circuit City), the sound and clarity are pretty good. I've used Sony DVD-R/DVD-RW and TDK DVD+R with the panasonic. I've heard rumors about problems with the Memorex dvd's but I've yet to confirm this for myself. The picture is good with the 1 hour, 2 hour and 4 hour mode. After that, it starts to get quite fuzzy and grainy with the 6 and 8 hour mode. However, for the price, the picture quality of this unit is quite exceptional. Also, being able to record from your cable box is quite awesome. I hear that the Sony's are unable to do this due to copyright issues.
- Widescreen recording
You can have programs recorded in the 16:9 format but it's limited to DVD-Video discs. There's also some modifications you can make according to uzun's comment:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=9036a56cfe729e9ecb54fd61b29cb98f&threadid=524214
- Ease of use:
Some people have complained about how non intuitive the remote looks. It's actually not that bad once you get thru the manual. The menu's may not be as pretty as sony but get the job done. You can set up this DVD Recorder for programming such like VCR Plus to record shows when you're not around. Finalizing discs for playback and editting such as naming the title of the program and choosing the appropriate thumbnail are fine. If you are also in a hurry and want to record a program without using the schedule recording option, you can just press the record button on either the device or the remote a number of times til you get the desired recording length (30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, etc).
- No DV camera connector
The one thing you can'd do here is connecting a DV camera directly to this recorder. The new Panasonic ES20 has this feature from what I've seen.
- Slim design
May not be the sturdiest design like the sony, but it is slim and can fit in tight spots if you're short on space esp. if your home entertainment system is qutie loaded with devices.
All in all, this is a great product. If you're unable to get this, go get the ES20S. I purchased one for my sister and found out that at the very least the difference is that the newer ES20S has a DV connector. It's also very cheap at places such as BestBuy ($170). Hope this helps...

Reliable and very easy to use

5 out of 5
This is good value for a excellent DVD recorder. I have not had any disc compatiblity issues and have produced no bad burns. The remote and menu layout is very easy to use and it just plain works well.

Avoid Panasonic

1 out of 5
I purchased a very expensive lemon. It functioned properly in the beginning, now the unit will only record on expensive RAM disks. I anticipate this function will stop working shortly. Panasonic customer service stumped and not helpful. I'll avoid this brand in the future.
